Is Georgia is a third world country? Georgia's women (in the US, not Soviet Georgia) are among the unhealthiest in the nation: uneducated, uninsured, more likely to have preventable diseases and more likely to die at younger ages. Our babies are more likely to be premature or die from preventable causes than almost any other industrialized nation.

Needed: H1N1
Back in 2008, when I was working with public health, I discussed with the nursing supervisor the ever-present problems within Floyd County public health. We discussed that many were praying for one case of West Nile or some other ‘scary’ virus to hit in Floyd County- then the health department could pretend that they had a real job to do and they could then justify not providing treatment to the thousands who were not getting needed care for our real and present STD epidemic. Now, in 2009, you can bet they are hoping for one decent H1N1 case, because the Floyd County Health Dep't is surely not providing proper STD care and the District Health Office is refusing to let anyone else provide STD care through the state lab either. INTERPRETATION: H1N1 is 'scary' but HIV= no big deal to public health.
