Bush Withholds Funding for Family Planning...Again!
Take Action!
Senate Bill Would Restore Funding for UNFPA
As part of his well documented “war on contraceptives,” George Bush has refused to provide congressionally approved aid to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the past six years. The work of UNFPA is so important that 181 countries contributed to the agency last year. Among those countries making donations were Haiti, Afghanistan, Iran and all of the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Indeed, under the Bush administration, the United States stands virtually alone in our refusal to support the important work that UNFPA is doing in some 150 poor nations. Recently, Sen. Hillary Clinton introduced legislation to force the administration to release the funding that congress appropriates. Her bill, S. 2682, the United Nations Population Fund Restoration Act of 2008, will ensure support for the critical work that UNFPA does in nearly 150 countries around the world. UNFPA’s programs are dedicated to increasing the availability of safe, effective contraceptives, improving reproductive health, raising the status of women, and helping to create healthy, sustainable lives for women, families and communities. Please take a moment to urge your Senators to join Sen. Clinton in this effort to restore U.S. support of UNFPA by cosponsoring S. 2682.
Thank you.
