Is Georgia is a third world country? Georgia's women (in the US, not Soviet Georgia) are among the unhealthiest in the nation: uneducated, uninsured, more likely to have preventable diseases and more likely to die at younger ages. Our babies are more likely to be premature or die from preventable causes than almost any other industrialized nation.

Good News for Women everywhere today
Good News for Women everywhere today: Ellen Sauerbrey, a Bush administration appointee and family planning opponent, has lost her position as Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration. . .[she] oversaw a budget of nearly $1 billion, and was responsible for implementing America's overseas family planning policies. .. To stay on in the position, she needed to be confirmed by the Senate. Due to her longstanding and deep-seated opposition to family planning, Population Connection mobilized a coalition of family planning advocates to oppose her nomination. The Senate failed to act by the end of 2007, and Sauerbrey was forced out . . . (may the people of Georgia have the courage to mobilize such a coalition of concerned citizens).
